"Solino"

I went to German Culture Centre earlier this month to see a movie. A decent woman at the front desk ushered us into the hall. which accomodates as many as 100 people.
The movie portrays the story of an Italian family that emigrated into Germany  in 1971. The family consists of Romano (father) and Rosa (mother) and their two sons. It's also about the brotherly love and hatred between Giancarlo (elder brother) and Gigi (younger brother). Romano deserted the idea of becoming a coal-miner in the Ruhr district. Instead he decided to open a pizzeria. Many German customers came to the Italian restaurant. His businnes was thriving.

In the meantime Giancarlo always flirted with German girls, held a wild party while Gigi was big into making documentary films with the help of his pretty girlfriend, Jo.
One day Romano cheated on his wife. She caught him with his pants down! She was so shocked and eventually suffered from an incurable disease, leukemia. The doctor suggested that she lead a quiet life in her hometwon, Solino in Italy. Gigi took her to Solino where he stayed with his mother.

In Germany Giancarlo passed for his younger brother and won the prize for the Ruhr District Film Festival. Gigi read the newspaper about this and he was mad, because his brother stole his prize.
He rushed to Germany to meet his brother. Naturally there was heavy fighting betweenn them.
The worst thing for Gigi to know was that Giancarlo had slept with Jo (Ouch!), while he was away from Germany.
Giancarlo was still adamant about staying in Germany. Gigi decided to come back to Solino to take care of his mother again.
Gigi loves making movies in Solino, too. He set up a small movie theater in the neighborhood.

In the end Gigi married an Italian girl, Ada, whom he knew from his childhood.
Giancarlo rushed to Italy to celebrate the marriage. He said to his brother, "Congratulations!" They hugged each other. But Romano was somehow reluctant to attend the wedding ceremony, because he was terrified of being humilated by the village people in Solino. Chicken!

After seeing the movie, there was a discussion in the library. A young German student was a facilitator and about 10 Japanese audience joined.
The facilitater pointed out this movie has various meanings for us. Is that so? I gave a thought about my own family.
I am the youngest. My eldest sister is 79 years old, followed by younger 75-year-old sister and 72-year-old brother. He's dead for years. I have no memories about fighting and hugging.
Come to think of it, I'm like an only child in the family. When I got home, I felt sad and weary.
